The ensemble cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi has finally come together, with Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), formerly known as Ben Solo, at the forefront. Director Rian Johnson's Episode VIII, titled The Last Jedi, has a vast canvas to work on, which was not the case for J.J. Abrams' decision-making process in setting up new characters.

Abrams' choice was straightforward and almost too simple, given the amount of additional work he had to do in establishing the film's new characters. As a result, the bold group of Rebels fighting against the monolithic Empire was recast as an independent Resistance battling the First Order, with both sides consciously adopting their predecessors' style and tactics.

'We very consciously tried to borrow familiar beats so the rest of the movie could hang on something that we knew was Star Wars,' Abrams said after the film's release. With Episode VI, Return of the Jedi, ending with the downfall of the Empire, Abrams realized early on in devising the story for Star Wars: The Force Awakens that the film needed to return to its good-vs.-evil dynamic.

This straightforward and elemental aspect was crucial to George Lucas's original pitch for the space-opera series. For 40 years, the Star Wars saga has largely been about the struggle between good and evil, with the Rebels and Empire, Light Side and Dark Side of the Force.
